Frequently asked questions

How many words do you need for JLPT N5?

About 700 to 800 words is the usual estimate. Lists differ because the test has no official vocabulary list. This page has 672 words, the N5 list Kotoba teaches.

Is there an official JLPT N5 vocabulary list?

No. The Japan Foundation stopped publishing official lists in 2010. Every N5 list, this one included, is built from the old official list, past tests and textbooks like Genki, so expect small differences between sources.

What is the best way to memorize N5 vocabulary?

Recall it, out loud, at spaced intervals. Reading a list feels productive but fades fast. Being asked for a word and producing it yourself, then seeing it again right before you would forget it, is what makes it stick. That is what spaced repetition does, and Kotoba runs it by voice so you can practice while your hands are busy.

Do I need to learn kanji for N5?

A little. N5 expects roughly 80 to 100 kanji, mostly numbers, days, time and very common words. This list shows each word the way it is usually written, with the kana reading next to it, so you can learn the sound first and the kanji as you meet it.
